Balcony solar questions

Grouped the way people ask them: permission first, then fitting, safety and orders. Can't see yours? Ask us.

Permission

Who gives permission for balcony solar in a rented flat?

Your landlord, in writing. If you rent through a letting agent, ask the agent to get the landlord's answer. With a housing association, use their process for alterations.

Does a leasehold flat need the freeholder's consent?

Usually. Most leases need consent for alterations or anything fixed to the outside of the building. The managing agent normally handles the request. Leasehold flats has the detail.

Can the building say no even if the rules allow it?

Yes. The rules say where plug-in solar can't go. Whether your landlord or freeholder agrees is up to them, so ask in writing and keep the answer.

Is there a letter I can send?

Yes. Our permission letters fill in your details and write the request. Copy, print or email it.

Fitting

Who puts the kit up?

You do. Plug-in kits are made to be set up by the person who lives there, following the maker's instructions. There's no installer or scaffolding, and we don't offer fitting.

Will it fit my railing?

Railing kits clamp to metal railings, and glass needs brackets approved for glass. Two full-size panels take about 3.6m of railing. Try the fit check.

Which way should my balcony face?

South gets the most sun of the day. East and west work well too, with strong morning or afternoon and evening sun.

Do I need an outdoor socket?

Yes: a weatherproof outdoor socket within reach of the kit's cable, with modern RCD protection in your fuse box. If you don't have one, an electrician can fit it. Ask permission first if you rent or lease.

Safety

Is balcony solar safe on a high floor?

Use only the kit's own brackets, never cable ties, rope or straps. Higher floors catch more wind, so your building may want the fixings checked, and that's sensible.

Can I use an extension lead?

No. The kit plugs straight into the socket. No extension leads, cable reels or adaptors.

Why are some buildings excluded?

The rules keep plug-in solar off timber balconies, buildings with timber, ACM, MCM or HPL cladding, and buildings having wall remediation. Where it can't go.

Do I tell my insurer?

Yes. Tell your home or contents insurer before the kit goes up.

Orders

When can I buy a balcony kit?

Kits are coming soon. We're choosing a maker whose kits are made for balconies and listed as Compliant on the ENA Type Test Register. Join the kit list to hear first.

How much will a kit cost?

Every kit shows Price TBC until the maker is signed. Kit list members hear the price first.

Can I have two kits?

No. The rules allow one plug-in kit per household. That rule is under review.

Do you deliver to Northern Ireland?

No. Plug-in solar isn't permitted there. We deliver to England, Scotland and Wales only.
